Fatal Anderson County tree accident death of Alan Leland Smith – Obituary

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office has identified 58-year-old Alan Leland Smith as the victim of a fatal accident involving a falling tree limb on Reece Haynie Road in Iva, South Carolina.

On the afternoon of May 9, authorities responded to a death investigation at Smith’s property. According to Deputy Coroner Don McCown, Smith had arrived earlier that day to continue renovations on the property he had inherited from his father.

Around 2:15 p.m., while cutting small pieces of wood near a dead tree, a large limb from the top of the tree fell and struck him. The limb, estimated to be 12 feet long and 2 feet in diameter, caused blunt force trauma, leading to Smith’s death.

The incident has been ruled accidental.
