Fatal Clawson shooting death of Derek Ayden Scholl – Obituary

Eighteen-year-old Derek Ayden Scholl tragically lost his life in a shooting that took place on May 22 in Clawson, Michigan. The incident occurred as Scholl and three others were preparing to leave a local apartment to attend a party.

According to officials, 21-year-old Tylaj Clark-Spencer of Howell was allegedly examining a firearm to check if it was loaded when it suddenly discharged, fatally wounding Scholl. Authorities believe the weapon had previously been stolen from a safe owned by the father of a 17-year-old involved in the incident.

Clark-Spencer has been charged with manslaughter, possessing a stolen firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. Joshua Peel, a 20-year-old from Royal Oak, and the unnamed 17-year-old are both facing charges of being accessories after the fact to manslaughter. Investigators say the 17-year-old later hid the firearm and other evidence for Clark-Spencer.

During arraignment at the 52-4 District Court in Troy, bond for Clark-Spencer was set at $1 million. Peel’s bond was set at $200,000, with a 10% provision. Both are due back in court on June 5 for a probable cause hearing, followed by a preliminary examination.

Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized that the shooting was a preventable tragedy and stressed the importance of keeping firearms out of the hands of those unfit to possess them.
