Fatal Rochester hit-and-run death of Henry Brown
Henry “Hank†Brown, a 70-year-old resident of Rochester, was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing South Union Street near Buena Place early Saturday morning. Authorities report that the incident occurred around 2:15 a.m., and the driver responsible fled the scene.
Brown, who lived just blocks from the site of the crash, was believed to be walking home at the time. He was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to Captain Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department.
For nearly 30 years, Brown was a beloved figure on Rochester’s East End, having served as the doorman at Salinger’s Pub on East Avenue. Dennis Sutton, the pub’s owner, called Brown the cornerstone of the establishment and a deeply trusted friend. Both men began working at the bar in 1996, and when Sutton eventually took ownership 15 years ago, Brown remained his steadfast support.
“He was everything to that place,†Sutton shared. “Even on nights he wasn’t scheduled, he’d be there anywayâ€â€Âalways cheerful, always treating people like they were family.â€ÂÂ
Brown had retired from county work, but continued working simply because he enjoyed connecting with people. He also had a deep love for his motorcycle, cherished his family, and looked forward to an annual trip to Key West.
At this time, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Plans for a memorial service are still pending, though Salinger’s intends to hold a tribute later this summer to honor Brown’s memory.
The Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is handling the investigation. Anyone with tips, eyewitness accounts, or video footage is encouraged to call 911, contact RPD at (585) 428-7157, reach out to CrimeStoppers at (585) 423-9300, or email [email protected].
