Fatal Northport shooting death of Dashun Witherspoon
Police responded to a disturbance call shortly after 7:42 p.m. on Wednesday in the 11400 block of Fairwood Avenue in the Huntington Place area. Dashun Witherspoon, a 28-year-old man, suffered multiple gunshot injuries and was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his wounds.
Investigators from the Tuscaloosa County’s Violent Crimes Division, led by Captain Marty Sellers, stated that the victim was involved in an altercation with Joyce Reed, a 47-year-old woman. According to the investigation, Reed fired the shots while standing outside her car, striking Witherspoon who was seated inside the vehicle. The authorities confirmed there was no indication Witherspoon posed a threat with a weapon before the shooting occurred.
Further inquiry is being conducted to clarify the relationship between Reed and the victim, according to Captain Sellers. Reed has been formally charged with capital murder and is currently detained without the possibility of release from the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
