Fatal Anniston car crash death of Robert Lee Womack
An off-duty Oxford police officer, returning home after attending church services, is reported to be responsible for the death of a pedestrian in Anniston. The fatality occurred late Wednesday evening following the collision.
The Calhoun County Coroner, Pat Brown, officially identified the deceased individual as Robert Lee Womack. He was 47 years of age and reportedly from Georgia.
The fatal accident took place at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Alabama 20, at the intersection with Iron Mountain Road. Emergency dispatchers were alerted after receiving reports of a person walking improperly in the road. The man involved in those initial reports was later identified as Womack.
Paramedics and police officers were dispatched to the scene. However, before the arrival of the responding officers, the off-duty police officer, operating his patrol vehicle, collided with Womack. Medical personnel confirmed Womack’s death at the location shortly after 9:37 p.m.
It is understood that Womack was in Anniston visiting a friend at the time of the incident. The coroner noted that the reason for Womack’s presence on the roadway was not yet known.
Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge confirmed that the off-duty officer was on his journey home from church. He expressed condolences and also highlighted the importance of nighttime road safety. Partridge issued a statement emphasizing the need for caution from both drivers and pedestrians. He stated, “This event serves as a grave reminder of the necessity for roadway safety for everyone, particularly during nighttime hours. Our thoughts are with the Womack family during this challenging period. We urge the public to remain vigilant and cautious while navigating our roadways.”
