Investigators from the California Highway Patrol’s Central Division arrested 28-year-old Juan Humberto Loza of Shafter on July 1, 2025, charging him with involvement in a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a man found shot inside his car on Interstate 5.

This occurred after an extensive search that lasted several hours. The Kern County Jail is where Loza was processed into custody on felony charges, including murder.

On the morning of June 30, 2025, emergency services were dispatched to southbound Interstate 5 following a report. Authorities located a man, identified as 38-year-old Alberto Garcia Hernandez Duran Jr., who had suffered gunshot injuries inside his vehicle. He was transported to a medical facility, but his condition was critical, and he later passed away.

Detectives with the California Highway Patrol determined that Loza fired multiple shots at the victim and his car. This investigation revealed the suspect’s actions leading to the tragic incident.

The search for Loza began on July 1, 2025, when law enforcement located him in the 18800 block of Beech Avenue in Shafter. Around 9:45 a.m., officers attempted to intercept his vehicle, but he fled on foot into nearby orchards near San Diego Street and Highway 43.

After a considerable manhunt, authorities apprehended Loza. At the scene of his arrest, officers recovered a handgun and his car. The ongoing investigation is seeking anyone with information, and they can contact CHP Detective J. Bridges at 661-396-6600.

Highway 43 was closed north of San Diego Street due to ongoing police activity, causing significant traffic delays. This closure was put in place to ensure safety during the search and apprehension efforts.
