Fatal Harris County car crash death of Daniel Perez
Harris County law enforcement personnel are seeking a vehicle operator involved in a tragic incident on Tuesday, July 2nd, where two cyclists were killed in a hit-and-run collision on Veterans Memorial Drive, northwest Houston.
The heartbroken family of Daniel Perez is appealing to the driver responsible for a double fatality involving cyclists to come forward and surrender to authorities.
This serious traffic incident occurred when two cyclists and two motor vehicles were involved on Veterans Memorial Drive, situated near Fallbrook Drive in the Harris County region.
Heather Perez serves as the niece of the deceased, Daniel Perez.
“How could you simply abandon someone to die there?” Heather expressed.
Daniel Perez, who was 52 years old, was remembered by his family for his large smile, profound love for his family, and his ability to remain relaxed and lighthearted.
“He was incredibly joyful, a truly happy person,” Heather noted.
Daniel’s mother, Guadeloupe Gonzalez, shared with local media that her son typically biked along Veterans Memorial each day on his commute home from work. She explained that the security guard at a nearby Valero gas station was vigilant, watching for him in the evening.
“He (the guard) observed everything,” Heather translated from Gonzalez’s words. “It was the store owner who contacted her first.”
According to local law enforcement, just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Perez and his companion, Krystal Calvillo, were attempting to cross the southbound lanes of Veterans Memorial when a woman driving a Toyota RAV4 struck Perez. Investigators later reported that the initial driver stopped briefly, but then Perez’s girlfriend rushed over to check on his condition. Law enforcement stated that a second vehicle subsequently collided with Calvillo, without stopping.
Perez’s mother is overwhelmed by the tragedy and deeply distressed that her son and his companion were left behind.
“You are a terrible person, and if you have children, God witnesses all actions,” Gonzalez conveyed her emotions.
Tragically, both Perez and Calvillo lost their lives as a result of these collisions. Investigators are actively pursuing leads to identify the fleeing vehicle. The family hopes that their public appeal might persuade the responsible party to turn themselves in.
“How could you do this?” Heather questioned. “It was a human life, a life of a person, not an animal, not worthless trash, but the life of a sincere, kind-hearted individual.”
Local media outlet ABC13 has requested specific details regarding the fleeing car, however, officials at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office indicated that their investigation is still gathering crucial information. The initial driver, who remained at the scene, is currently not being charged.
