The families of three North Texas children are devastated, as their daughters were among those who tragically did not survive the flash flooding at Camp Mystic Friday in the Texas Hill Country. Two other families report their daughters are still missing from the camp.
Heavy tropical rain began falling before dawn Friday, rapidly filling the Guadalupe River. In just 45 minutes, the river swelled by 26 feet. The fast-moving water surged into the darkness, overwhelming people, homes, vehicles, and trees downstream.
Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp located southwest of Hunt along the Guadalupe River, was severely impacted. Officials confirmed Saturday they were still searching for 27 children from the camp.
The missing individuals included some from North Texas, according to NBC 5. Two families have informed NBC 5 that their daughters did not survive. Three other families are waiting for confirmation.
Missing campers included Hadley Hanna and Wynne Naylor. The mother of Renee Smajstrla, who resides in Kerr County, shared with NBC 5 that her daughter was initially listed as missing and later confirmed deceased. Renee shared a cabin with Eloise Peck and Lila Bonner, both from Dallas.
The mother of 8-year-old Anna Margaret Bellows confirmed late Saturday night that her body had been recovered. This Houston girl also shared a cabin with the North Texas girls.
No further updates were available regarding the search for the missing girls.
Tragically, among the fatalities were Eloise Peck, Lila Bonner, and Janie Hunt. The family of Eloise Peck, from Dallas, confirmed she had been found dead. They released a statement expressing heavy sorrow.
The family of Lila Bonner, also from Dallas and a student at Highland Park ISD’s Bradfield Elementary School, confirmed her death. Their statement expressed profound grief and requested privacy, with no further details available at that time. A vigil planned for Sunday at Bradfield Elementary would honor both Eloise Peck and Lila Bonner.
The mother of Janie Hunt, another Dallas victim, confirmed her daughter was among those who died. She expressed the profound devastation her family felt.
If the families decide to announce funeral plans or share more information, it will be reported.
To assist the affected communities in Central Texas, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha suggested contacting the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. This 501(c)(3) charity has set up a relief fund specifically for recovery efforts following the July 4 flooding.
All donations raised through this fund go directly to organizations actively involved in the emergency response. Donations are tax-deductible, and donors will receive a receipt.

The ongoing tragedy has significantly impacted the region, with continuing reports of fatalities and the search for missing individuals.
