A man identified as Jason Gurganus died in a tragic incident occurring on the Intracoastal Waterway in Pender County, North Carolina. According to authorities, the fatal event happened on Sunday afternoon.
A wildlife official stated that two individuals were aboard a boat, with the vessel stationary along the Intracoastal Waterway around 1:30 p.m. when Mr. Gurganus was struck by lightning. Bystanders provided emergency assistance, performing CPR, and managed to transport the 53-year-old man to the Marsh Creek/Scotts Hill Marina before emergency medical services transported him to a hospital. Tragically, Mr. Gurganus did not survive his injuries.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission spokesperson noted that another person was present on the boat but was not seriously injured. This incident represents the second occurrence of a lightning-related fatality along the coast this year, prompting officials to remind the public about the dangers of being on the water during severe weather.
A wildlife captain commented on the event, saying, “There are no indications of any intentional actions involved; it is simply a natural occurrence.” With the upcoming holiday weekend expected to bring more recreational boating activity, authorities urge caution and awareness regarding the risks associated with lightning strikes on the water.
Gurganus is reported to be receiving treatment at a burn center hospital.
