A young man from Stockbridge, Larenz Collins, has died after drowning while swimming at West Point Lake. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, July 1st.
According to local authorities, Collins was enjoying a swim at the park near the dam when he encountered difficulty. A member of the public contacted emergency services at around 7:10 p.m. that evening, alerting them to the situation.
A multi-agency response was mounted, with personnel from the state’s natural resources agency, the federal engineering corps, and the local fire department converging on the scene. Teams equipped for underwater search and rescue were deployed, initiating operations to locate the individual.
However, the rescue attempt was interrupted by a powerful storm that swept through the region, forcing divers to temporarily suspend their search activities for safety reasons.
By 10:45 p.m., the operation resumed and the unfortunate individual’s body was successfully brought to the surface. Collins, who was 22 years old, was officially confirmed as the missing swimmer.
Law enforcement officials have stated that the event is being treated as an unintentional mishap. They have not indicated any suspicion of criminal activity.
