Fatal Pierson train collision death of Oscar Cardenas
Investigators from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office report two brothers lost their lives when their vehicle was struck by a train in Pierson on Wednesday evening.
The incident happened around 9:14 p.m. The brothers, identified as Oscar Cardenas, aged 32, and his younger sibling Jehu Cardenas, who was 20, were residents of Pierson.
They were driving a four-door Chevrolet sedan when the accident transpired.
According to the Sheriff’s Office post, the driver, Oscar Cardenas, was attempting to bypass active railroad gates with flashing lights while crossing W. Washington Avenue from County Road 3, traveling eastbound.
A train proceeding northbound subsequently collided with their vehicle.
Sheriff’s office personnel pronounced both victims deceased at the scene.
