Fatal Tempe shooting death of Steven Bevan

Tempe law enforcement reported that an unfortunate shooting incident in Arizona resulted in the death of a young boy’s father. Authorities arrested Dustin Jackson, a 46-year-old man, on July 1st on charges related to the death of motorist Steven Bevan, whose identity was confirmed by various news organizations. The Tempe Police Department issued a probable cause statement regarding the incident, which was also reported by Arizona’s Family.

According to official court documents, Jackson claimed he was driving behind Bevan, who was halted at a traffic signal. Jackson stated that Bevan failed to move his vehicle when the light turned green, leading Jackson to honk his horn. The documents indicate that both men proceeded through the intersection after the light changed, subsequently occupying different lanes.

Contradicting Jackson’s account, police investigations confirmed through video surveillance that Bevan veered in front of Jackson’s truck and stopped. Subsequently, Bevan exited his vehicle and approached Jackson’s GMC Sierra truck. One of Bevan’s minor children captured the event on camera, showing their father raising his hands initially before placing them back by his sides as he drew near Jackson’s vehicle.

Jackson opened the driver’s side door of his truck and fired a shot, striking Bevan in the chest. Police reports noted that Jackson’s 6-year-old daughter was present inside the vehicle during the shooting. Bevan was found to be approximately five feet away from Jackson’s truck at the time of the fatal injury.

Emergency medical services transported Bevan to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 12:36 p.m. His two minor children, aged 8 and 9, were secured inside Bevan’s vehicle and were later transported by their mother. Jackson informed law enforcement that he felt “threatened to his own life and that of his daughter,” according to the gathered evidence.

During the official inquiry, investigators obtained a search warrant for Bevan’s vehicle but did not uncover any firearms or weapons. Police records also highlighted a physical discrepancy between the two individuals, noting Jackson’s height was 6 feet 8 inches, while Bevan was recorded as being 5 feet 7 inches tall.

Further information indicates Jackson resides in Phoenix and holds the distinction of being a Marine Corps veteran. The official court proceedings set Jackson’s bail amount at $1 million.
