The fatal incident at Richmond Road Baptist Church happened on Sunday, July 13, in Lexington, Kentucky, claiming the life of Beverly Gumb, who was 72 years old.
Earlier that day, a separate incident took place near Blue Grass Airport, where an unknown person fired upon a Kentucky State Police officer on Terminal Drive around 11:35 a.m. Eastern Time. After escaping the scene, the suspect drove approximately 17 miles to the church and resumed shooting.
Officials confirmed that besides Beverly Gumb, Christina Combs, aged 32, was also killed in the church shooting. Additionally, two men were injured during the attack; one remains in critical condition, while the other is in stable health. The trooper involved in the initial shooting was taken to a hospital and is currently stable.
Law enforcement officers from the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police confronted the suspect, leading to his death. However, authorities have not provided details on how he was killed.
Governor Andy Beshear addressed the situation by asking the public to pray for those affected and recognizing the prompt actions taken by the Lexington Police and state troopers.
Multiple agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are partnering with local police and the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team to gather evidence from both sites. The motive behind the suspect’s actions is still unknown.
The shooting at the airport did not disrupt normal operations, and flights continued without issues. Later that afternoon, a coroner’s vehicle was spotted at the church, emphasizing the severity of the tragedy.
Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman discussed the dangers law enforcement faces, stating that the events were a harsh reminder of the risks officers encounter daily.
As the Lexington community mourns the loss of life, authorities have assured the public that no further threats are expected.
