Fatal Tilton car crash death of Benjamin A. Wilson
The driver identified in the early morning incident is Benjamin A. Wilson, aged 48, from Granby, Vermont. New Hampshire State Police announced Wilson’s identity on Friday.
According to Tilton-Northfield Fire Chief Michael Sitar, emergency personnel were dispatched around 1:45 in the early morning hours to a scene involving a tractor-trailer that had gone off I-93 in the area southbound of Exit 20, near the Nucar Automall. This location features a bridge spanning railroad tracks and the Winnipesaukee River.
State Police confirmed that Wilson lost control of his tractor-trailer. He failed to properly handle a curve on the road, causing the vehicle to breach the center guardrail, cross the median, travel down the embankment, cross the railroad tracks, and ultimately end up in the river.
First responders arrived at the scene and discovered Wilson deceased. Sitar mentioned that investigators are examining the reasons behind Wilson’s decision to drive off the road. He suggested two possibilities: that Wilson might have fallen asleep and been unaware of the upcoming turn, or that he could have experienced a medical emergency that impaired his ability to steer the vehicle.
Complicating rescue efforts was the unstable nature of the submerged truck, making initial attempts to recover Wilson challenging. A successful rescue was eventually carried out later that morning.
