Fatal Summerton car crash death of Chester J. Field

A 92-year-old man from Summerton, Chester J. Field, met his demise after intervening to assist a motorist on Interstate 95 and subsequently being hit by a passing truck. Identified by the Clarendon County Coroner, Jacqueline Blackwell, as the individual involved, Field was a resident of Princess Pond Road. Sources from the South Carolina Highway Patrol indicated the collision took place at approximately 2:40 p.m. on August 6th in the southbound direction of I-95, near mile marker 111, which is roughly three miles north of Summerton. The vehicles involved were a 2025 Ford F-650 truck with three people inside, who suffered no injuries, and Chester J. Field, who was walking. According to investigators, Field had pulled his car over to the emergency lane after noticing another vehicle stopped on the side of the road and was attempting to cross the interstate when the truck collided with him. The driver of the truck attempted to steer clear of Field, but the vehicle’s passenger-side mirror made contact with him, causing the fatal injuries. Emergency Medical Services responded first and airlifted Field to Trident Medical Center in Summerville, where he succumbed to his wounds at 3:40 p.m. on August 7th. The Highway Patrol confirmed that neither alcohol nor drugs were considered factors in the accident, and the case is ongoing.
