Fatal Portland car crash death of DaRon V. Craig

Police reports confirmed the identity of the man killed when struck by a vehicle in Northeast Portland Thursday morning. The 49-year-old victim was DaRon V. Craig, according to law enforcement.

The fatal collision took place on the 5900 block of NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 11:45 a.m. Investigators stated the driver of a silver Ford Escape was traveling north on that thoroughfare when they drove onto the east side sidewalk and hit Craig and another person walking near NE Jarrett Street.

Emergency medical services pronounced Craig deceased at the scene. The second individual involved in the collision received serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Police updates Friday indicated the second pedestrian remains in the hospital with “severe” injuries, although their health has improved.

The driver of the Ford Escape is still unidentified. Both the driver and another motorist involved in the incident were taken to medical facilities for treatment. Their injuries were not considered critical.

Authorities expressed no indication the crash was deliberate. Information from police reveals the Ford Escape driver possesses two prosthetic limbs, though it is unknown if this played a role in the incident.

Initial statements from police described the vehicle as “customized” for a driver with a disability. However, a subsequent update clarified that the car was standard except for a platform attached to the trailer hitch.

No charges have been filed, and no traffic tickets were given. The incident is currently being examined by investigators.
