Norfolk police have officially identified the individual who died after being shot by law enforcement officers in the Hewitt Farms area, reports indicate. The incident occurred near Ocean View.

The Norfolk Police Department responded to a burglary alert shortly before midday on Friday. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Dwayne D. Harris inside a residence, according to official statements. Harris was reported to have forcibly entered the home. He was observed possessing a firearm and quickly escaped in a vehicle, as stated by Police Chief Mark Talbot at the subsequent Friday news conference.

The pursuit continued for approximately two city blocks, ending at an intersection within the 8300 block of Meadow Creek Road. Talbot confirmed that Harris exited his vehicle and brandished a weapon directly at responding officers. In response to the perceived threat, the officers discharged their weapons. Harris succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Virginia State Police are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
