Jorge Zúñiga dies in fatal Second Section fire.

Fatal Second Section fire death of Jorge Zúñiga.

Just before dawn on Wednesday, August 6, emergency responders were dispatched after a blaze erupted at a housing complex situated on Obregón Avenue, located between D and E streets within the Second Section area. Fire service personnel from Station 1 arrived quickly and, upon inspection, found the body of a man at the front door of Apartment 10 on the second level.

Investigators from the State Investigation Agency’s Serious Crime Division were brought in alongside forensic experts once the fire was put out. The man identified as Jorge Zúñiga, who was 76 years old, was recognized as a well-known kidney specialist in the area. Official sources stated that Zúñiga had suffered multiple cuts and significant third-degree burns.

Informants from the nearby community shared that Zúñiga had been residing with a young individual struggling with substance abuse issues, whom the doctor was assisting in getting back on his feet. The doctor had previously mentioned to acquaintances that he was worried the addict could pose a threat to him and that he was having difficulty sleeping due to worry.

As the probe continues, authorities suspect that the fire might have been intentionally started to cover up the murder, and they are focusing on the possibility that the perpetrator is someone intimately connected to the victim. Finding the young man is now a key objective for the ongoing inquiry.
