The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a deadly two-vehicle accident that took place on Friday afternoon along Route 33 in the Town of Bergen.
According to the sheriff’s office statement, emergency dispatch received a 911 call at 12:25 p.m. alerting them to the crash. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they discovered the driver of a 2013 blue Ford Focus deceased at the location.
The individual killed was identified as Joseph M. Meli, a 39-year-old from Batavia. Investigators reported that Mr. Meli was moving eastbound when he tried to pass another car and collided head-on with a 2024 gold Hyundai Ioniq 5 driving westbound.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 32-year-old woman from North Chili, received serious injuries and was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital.
Three other people in her car were also hurt. A 35-year-old man from North Chili suffered serious injuries, while two teenagers in the back seat had minor injuries. Everyone was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
The reason for the crash is still under investigation by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
At the accident site, additional help was provided by the New York State Police, the Town of Bergen Fire Department, the Byron and South Byron fire departments, LeRoy Fire Department, LeRoy Ambulance, the Genesee County Office of Emergency Management, and Mercy EMS.
