Michael Dwayne Bell dies in fatal Centerville shooting
Fatal Centerville shooting death of Michael Dwayne Bell
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a man identified as Michael Dwayne Bell, 37, from Fitzgerald, was killed during a police encounter in Centerville on August 8. A police official was also shot during the incident but is expected to make a full recovery.
The fatal shooting occurred at approximately 3:45 a.m. in the parking area of the Galleria Mall. Bell was inside a semi-trailer truck at the scene, authorities stated. Bell was sought by local authorities due to a prior case involving domestic violence.
Bell fired a weapon at law enforcement officers who were trying to de-escalate the situation and gain entry to the vehicle. In response, other officers fired back. It is not yet clear how many shots were fired during the exchange.
By the following morning, around 6:20 a.m., officers arrived at the scene and discovered that Bell had died from his injuries. No other individuals sustained injuries in the incident.
The incident drew law enforcement from several agencies, including the Centerville Police Department, Warner Robins Police Department, and the Byron Police Department.
