Local law enforcement confirmed two fatalities resulting from a violent flood event. Deputies reported that a vehicle driven by Lottie Alston and Raymond Evans Jr. encountered rapidly rising waters while crossing a road.

The car was subsequently pushed off the road and landed in a ditch. Rescue personnel noted the water depth there was more than six feet. Law enforcement reported that the woman, identified as Alston, climbed onto the vehicle’s roof. When ordered to remain by responding officers, she reportedly fell into the water.

Spring Hope Lieutenant Leary entered the water to assist. At that moment, the man also entered the water from the submerged vehicle. Both rescue attempts were ultimately unsuccessful as the current swept them away.

“The moment I turned around and looked, I saw her partially submerged,” Leary recounted. “This was about 25 feet away from me. I felt I could make a difference. So I ran and dove in, attempting to reach her. The water was moving extremely fast. It was over my head, and I never reached her.”

Rescue teams managed to bring Leary to safety. However, the man and woman from the vehicle could not be located immediately.

After the waters subsided, officials confirmed the identities of the deceased. Lottie Alston, aged 24, and Raymond Evans Jr., aged 55, were both residents of Louisburg. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for ABC11 noted that a witness observed the incident unfold. This person described seeing a vehicle approach a flooded crossing. They stated it attempted to turn back but it was too late.

“This experience was deeply unsettling,” a Spring Hope resident stated. “When I saw the rescue boats arrive, I realized the situation was serious.”

NC 581 was closed at the US 64 Alternate route due to severe flooding. Crews addressed the damage in the area.
