Investigators concluded that the pickup truck was stationary on County Road 20 when the passenger car approached and collided with it head-on on Highway 26. The vehicle carrying Lyle Downs, an 83-year-old resident of Scottsbluff, was the pickup truck. The official identification of the deceased was confirmed by authorities, and family notification procedures were being handled.

The driver of the passenger car received minor injuries that did not require hospitalization and was treated on the scene.
