The crash happened around mid-morning on the west edge of Scottsbluff, specifically at the junction involving Highway 26 and County Road 20. Two motor vehicles were involved in the incident, with one being a pickup truck and the other a passenger car.
Investigators concluded that the pickup truck was stationary on County Road 20 when the passenger car approached and collided with it head-on on Highway 26. The vehicle carrying Lyle Downs, an 83-year-old resident of Scottsbluff, was the pickup truck. The official identification of the deceased was confirmed by authorities, and family notification procedures were being handled.
The driver of the passenger car received minor injuries that did not require hospitalization and was treated on the scene. Local law enforcement, including the Nebraska State Patrol and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Deputies, secured the area, while Scottsbluff Rural Firefighters provided assistance at the scene.
