Law enforcement officials have confirmed the identification of the two individuals who lost their lives in a serious traffic collision that occurred on Saturday, August 9, near the community of Tornillo within East El Paso County.
Dispatched around 2 p.m. to the intersection of MF Aguilera and OT Smith, responding authorities arrived at the scene of a head-to-head vehicle impact.
The preliminary inquiry by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office indicates that the vehicles involved were a large pickup truck and a compact sport utility vehicle.
Tragically, the operator of the compact SUV, identified as Maria Escudero Loya, a 51-year-old resident, did not survive the incident and was pronounced deceased at the accident site.
The passenger seated in the compact SUV, Mayrin Perez, who was 21 years of age, was taken to a regional medical center but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries later that day.
Meanwhile, the driver of the pickup truck was transported to the same hospital for medical treatment, though the extent of their injuries remains undetermined by the Sheriff’s Office at this point.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with no immediate indication from officials regarding the potential role of excessive speed in this devastating event.
