Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday night in Kansas City, leaving a teenager dead. According to the Kansas City Police Department, law enforcement officers responded around 10:00 p.m. to the area encompassing East 36th Street and Norton Avenue, following reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, authorities reported finding a teenage girl, later identified as Traelynn Sibley, who was found unresponsive and had suffered one or more gunshot wounds. Medical personnel were dispatched to the scene and transported Sibley to a hospital. Tragically, hospital staff pronounced her dead shortly after her arrival.
Initial investigations indicate that Sibley was inside the residence when she was struck by gunfire from an unidentified individual or individuals outside the home. Police have not yet apprehended a suspect, but crime scene investigators and homicide detectives are actively examining the area and gathering evidence.
Following the tragic events of Saturday night, Mayor Quinton Lucas released a statement on Sunday morning addressing Sibley’s death and the ongoing issue of violence in Kansas City. He expressed profound sorrow, emphasizing that each violent death is a tragedy and lamenting the high number of such incidents affecting women and girls this year, including the recent loss. He mourned the passing of another young person in the community and pledged the city’s commitment to investing in resources for domestic crisis victims, supporting youth, and pursuing swift justice for violent offenders. The mayor also noted that Sibley’s death represents the city’s 100th homicide of the year, a grim statistic that Kansas City has reached on 33 separate occasions over the last four decades.
