Law enforcement in Denton carried out a probe into a fatal shooting that took place on Saturday afternoon within the city’s downtown area.

According to initial reports, authorities were alerted around 12:10 p.m. to a disturbance in the 200 block of West Hickory Street, prompting an immediate response.

Investigators from the Denton Police Department are examining a shooting incident that occurred downtown on Saturday afternoon.

Available information suggests the event began when a man was present with his family at the Denton Downtown Square. A confrontation then erupted with another person, confirmed through autopsy by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office to be 61-year-old Jon Ruff.

The argument escalated, resulting in the man firing multiple shots at Ruff. Ruff was taken to a hospital but was declared deceased.

The individual who fired the weapon stayed at the location and was taken into custody for further questioning. He is reported to be assisting the ongoing investigation.
