Fatal New York City shooting death of Didarul Islam
A gunman unleashed gunfire at a commercial building in Manhattan, resulting in the death of off-duty NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was 36 years old and a father of two children. The incident occurred on Monday at 345 Park Avenue, a location housing companies such as Blackstone and the NFL. Islam, originally from Bangladesh, had been a member of the New York Police Department for approximately 3.5 years and resided in the Bronx. His wife was expecting their third child at the time of the tragedy.
The assailant, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting at least four individuals, including Islam. A fifth person sustained severe injuries while attempting to escape. The other victims’ identities were not disclosed pending notification of their families, and four people were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries they incurred during the evacuation.
Mayor Eric Adams addressed the public, calling Islam a hero for his actions during the attack. He emphasized that the officer was a devout individual who embodied New York City’s values, having immigrated from Bangladesh to serve the community. Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura acted alone and had a history of mental health issues, stating that Islam was performing duties consistent with his role as a police officer when he was targeted. The city mourned the loss, with four families left to grieve the tragic event.
