Fatal Newberry County shooting death of Rose Helen Kewlani

The Newberry County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that a 52-year-old woman from West Columbia lost her life following a shooting incident on I-26 West, mile marker 82. This location is near the SC-773/Prosperity exit in Newberry County. An autopsy has been officially requested and is planned for this week.

Law enforcement reports indicate that a 45-year-old man from Columbia named Wilfrido George Luna was identified as the shooter. Officials stated he targeted Kewlani inside a vehicle close to Exit 82 before crossing the interstate. Following a brief pursuit, authorities located Luna at the Mid-Carolina Country Club. After a short period of negotiation, law enforcement successfully apprehended him. Multiple agencies provided assistance, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), which is supporting the ongoing investigation. Charges against Luna include murder, and this situation is currently under active investigation with updates expected.
