Fatal Duluth shooting death of Mae Dean Davin
DULUTH – The Duluth Police Department reported finding Mae Dean Davin lifeless inside her residence on Saturday, with her son Nathan Douglas Davin later charged with her murder. The incident occurred at 1511 N. Ninth Ave. E.
Investigators state the victim was discovered unconscious in a recliner by her son, who initially told responding officers he had just awakened to discover her deceased. Nathan Davin was arrested Tuesday and faces charges of intentional second-degree murder for the death that took place in their East Hillside home.
According to the official court documents, Mae Dean Davin was positioned in her recliner in a manner suggesting sleep when she was shot in the face from close proximity. The fatal wound was discovered by law enforcement at the property located at 1511 N. Ninth Ave. E.
The 46-year-old suspect displayed concerning behavior leading up to the incident. Police observed Nathan Douglas Davin knocking on a neighbor’s door at 10:50 p.m., claiming something related to a death. This individual subsequently called emergency services after noticing the suspect appeared intoxicated and was dressed in only boxers.
Further details indicate the suspect contacted this same neighbor by phone shortly after, stating “My mom’s dead. She blew her head off.” When police arrived at the scene, they observed evidence of apparent blood on Nathan Davin’s hands before entering the residence.
Inside, officers discovered the victim with a severe gunshot wound. Evidence at the scene included a spent shell casing on the floor near the chair and a bullet fragment close to the exit wound. No firearm was located in the immediate vicinity of the victim.
During the search of the suspect’s upstairs bedroom, authorities recovered two pistols. Additional firearms were found inside an unlocked safe. One of the recovered guns showed signs of blood and was discovered beside a box of ammunition believed to be its complement.
Following his transport to the Public Safety Building, recordings from the interview room revealed Nathan Davin making several spontaneous statements, including “wake up to bullshit” and expressing regret over his actions. He eventually confessed to investigators, saying “God damn it, I killed my mother.”
The victim’s legal representative indicated Mae Dean Davin’s position in the recliner suggested sleep at the time of the shooting. A judge authorized an $750,000 bail request with supervised release denied. Nathan Douglas Davin’s legal team has requested public defender services for his upcoming September 15 court appearance.
This tragic case represents the third homicide in Duluth this year and continues a disturbing trend of domestic violence related deaths in the community over the past five years.
