Fatal Columbia shooting death of JoKayne Carter
The Richland County Coroner, Naida Rutherford, officially confirmed the identity of the person who died in a deadly shooting that took place on Friday at a housing complex for students who live away from their schools. The deceased is nineteen-year-old JoKayne Carter, described as a resident of Columbia.
Saturday brought news from the Richland County Sheriff’s Office as they stated that nineteen-year-old Tyron Shelley and twenty-year-old Ta’John Goodwin have been arrested for charges of murder related to the shooting incident. Both suspects are aged nineteen and twenty respectively.
Photographs released by WIS News 10 show Ta’John Goodwin, who is twenty, and Tyron Shelley, who is nineteen. The images indicate Goodwin on the left and Shelley on the right, reinforcing their roles in the case.
Deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the apartment complex around 12:30 p.m. on Friday following reports that someone had been shot. Upon their arrival, they found JoKayne Carter with an injury from a gunshot affecting his upper body. Medical officials at the scene confirmed that the young man was no longer alive.
Further investigation by the Richland County authorities led them to identify a gold-colored Chevy Tahoe as the vehicle used by the suspects. This car and its driver, Tyron Shelley, were located at Shelley’s home in the Earlewood neighborhood, after which he was arrested without delay.
Investigators also discovered a stolen firearm in Shelley’s residence, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. This weapon was reported as stolen from an area in Florence County.
After Tyron Shelley was taken into custody, Ta’John Goodwin, the twenty-year-old, surrendered to the sheriff’s office. His family reportedly assisted in his cooperation with the authorities. Goodwin turned himself in at the headquarters of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday.
Both individuals have faced formal charges including murder. They are scheduled to be processed for booking at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia.
