Fatal Columbia County car crash death of Martel Kyles
On Saturday night, a Columbia County deputy initiated contact with a gold Toyota Camry, identifying the driver as Martel Kyles. Kyles was reported as being wanted by authorities in Richmond County for charges related to simple assault, with indications that he possessed potentially violent behaviors.
When the vehicle accelerated onto I-20 East, the law enforcement officer notified dispatch about a pursuit. According to reports, Kyles exited the highway in Richmond County before re-entering Columbia County, subsequently heading west on Wrightsboro Road.
It is stated that during this chase, the suspect’s vehicle was recorded exceeding one hundred miles per hour. In response, spike strips were deployed on Wrightsboro Road near John Deere Parkway, resulting in the vehicle’s tires being punctured.
As Kyles continued at high speed, his attempt to turn right onto John Deere Parkway led to a loss of control. He skidded, jumped the curb, struck a sign located in the median barrier, and his car subsequently rolled over.
Both Kyles and the passenger were initially trapped within the vehicle, which then began to catch fire. Deputies arrived at the scene and found Kyles, who showed no signs of responsiveness, located on the vehicle’s roof. In the meantime, they managed to rescue the passenger.
Emergency medical services and fire department units responded to the incident. Kyles was transported to Doctors Hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
