Just prior to 10 p.m., law enforcement reported that a driver moving westward swerved into the opposite lane and collided with the two pedestrians on the outer sidewalk.
According to Decatur law enforcement, both Candace Wilt, aged 38, and Christopher Cox, aged 29, were strolling on the western part of W. Main Street in the West End district. Approximately 10 p.m., a motorist driving westward veered across the oncoming traffic and collided with the two individuals on the side walkway.
Tragically, Wilt did not survive the impact and passed away at the crash site. Emergency personnel rushed Cox to Springfield Memorial Hospital, where he arrived with potentially fatal wounds.
In an August 25th statement, the Sangamon County Coroner disclosed that Cox succumbed to numerous impacts sustained in the collision late Saturday afternoon.
