Fatal train collision death of Dwayne Alton Bryant in Clayton, North Carolina

A traffic collision involving a train resulted in the death of a driver in Clayton on Monday. The incident occurred at Central Street between Front Street and E. Main Street, near the Clayton Post Office. According to Clayton Police, the accident happened around 10:50 a.m. A 2012 Toyota Corolla attempted to make a left turn from E. Main Street onto Central Street. At the time, the crossing signals were down in both directions, and lights were flashing. The eastbound Norfolk Southern cargo train collided with the driver’s side of the car. The Corolla subsequently rolled and was pulled approximately 300 feet away from the scene. The driver identified as Dwayne Alton Bryant, 62, of Clayton, did not survive the crash. No individuals on the train sustained injuries. The incident is currently under investigation and was recorded by Clayton Police traffic cameras. This collision occurred in the same area where a 21-year-old college student was killed earlier that month.

Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart stated that investigators examining the previous incident involving Ellaryan Marie Miller, a student at UNC-Wilmington, determined she was departing her summer internship position in Clayton when she crossed the railroad tracks and was struck by the train. Miller, from Wendell, was walking towards her vehicle located in a parking area on Front Street.
