Fatal Ross County car crash death of Harold Smith Jr.

Two fatalities occurred as a result of a collision involving an Ohio State Highway Patrol vehicle on Tuesday morning in Ross County. The incident took place along state Route 104 in Union Township around the 10:20 a.m. mark. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a standardly marked cruiser was moving south on Route 104 when it suffered a head-on impact with a Chevrolet Silverado. This other automobile had strayed into the left lane and proceeded to cross into the opposing path. Following the crash, both vehicles veered off the side of the road, and the Silverado subsequently erupted in flames.

Harold Smith Jr., a 45-year-old resident of Circleville who was operating the Chevrolet Silverado at the time, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. A second individual inside the Silverado, 29-year-old Amber Aills from Chillicothe, was transported to Adena Regional Medical Center but later passed away from her injuries. One of the officers involved in the patrol force was also injured during the event; he was airlifted to Adena Regional Medical Center for treatment that did not initially threaten his life, but he was then moved to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for additional medical attention.
