Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department official Major Ryan Kendall stated that when officers arrived at the scene, the victim was discovered with visible cuts from a sharp instrument. Medical responders arrived and sadly confirmed that the individual had passed away at the location.

The police have identified the deceased person as Iryna Zarutska, who was 23 years old. The individual suspected of carrying out the attack is Decarlos Brown, reported to be 34 years of age. It has not been officially confirmed whether Zarutska and Brown were familiar with each other, and some observers are concerned about the potential possibility that the attack was carried out randomly.
