Fatal Rio du Sul allergic reaction death of Leticia Paul

A law student, identified as Leticia Paul, who was 22 years old, passed away following a serious allergic response during a standard medical test. Local media sources reported the incident.

The young woman was receiving a contrast CT scan at the Alto Valle Regional Hospital in Rio du Sul, Brazil, on Wednesday. Tragically, she developed anaphylactic shock because of the solution used in the procedure.

Her aunt, Sandra Paul, informed G1 that Leticia was intubated at the hospital but sadly passed away within less than one day after the scan. The family stated that Leticia had a prior medical issue involving kidney stones and was having this CT scan, which employs X-rays and computer analysis to produce detailed internal body images.

According to Oeste SC Noticias, Leticia Paul recently obtained a law degree from Colegio Sinodal Ruy Barbosa and was engaged in postgraduate studies combining Law and Real Estate.

Leticia’s former educational institution expressed its sympathy to the family. Similarly, the Alto Vale Regional Hospital expressed its regret over the loss and offered its support, along with a statement emphasizing its dedication to ethical practices, openness, and patient safety.

Iodinated contrast material is commonly inserted via a vein during tests like CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays to improve the visibility of internal structures. Although this substance is broadly utilized in medical treatments and typically considered safe, significant allergic incidents are rare, happening in only a small fraction of cases. Most individuals may experience minor effects like warmth, nausea, or skin irritation after the injection.
