Investigators from the Mississippi Highway Patrol are examining two fatal road incidents that occurred on August 23, 2025.

The initial collision happened on Highway 448 in Sunflower County around 10:00 p.m. A 2020 Ram 1500 truck was moving eastbound on the roadway when it collided head-on with a 2023 Hyundai Elantra heading west. The Hyundai driver, Martez L. Duncan, a 33-year-old from Southaven, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the Ram were taken to nearby medical facilities with non-life-threatening injuries.

A second accident took place shortly after 10:00 a.m. the following day near the junction of U.S. 61 and Laughlin Road in Cleveland. A 2012 Chrysler 300 traveling south collided with a pedestrian, identified as 51-year-old Terry L. Ramiz of Cleveland. Ramiz was rushed to the scene but was confirmed dead. The driver of the Chrysler escaped harm.

Separately, law enforcement arrested an unidentified man for allegedly discharging firearms into a residence in Columbia. No further details were provided regarding the incident or the suspect’s identity.

Both motor vehicle collisions are currently being probed by the Highway Patrol.
