Fatal Santa Clara car crash death of Isaiah Mendoza
A fatal collision on a highway near Santa Clara resulted in the death of a teenage driver. The incident occurred around 9:36 p.m. on the 20th of September at the intersection of Lawrence Expressway and Benton Street. Santa Clara law enforcement reported finding a young man inside a Honda sedan that had collided with a traffic signal pole, with two underage individuals outside the vehicle at the scene.
Paramedics from Santa Clara Fire arrived and attempted to save the driver’s life, but unfortunately, he did not survive the injuries. Isaiah Mendoza, identified as a resident of Sunnyvale and a student at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, was confirmed as the deceased. The two passengers, also minors, were reported to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries by the police.
Further details from the investigation indicate another vehicle, a Toyota sedan, was involved. The driver of the Toyota was present at the scene and reportedly worked cooperatively with the investigating officers. According to police findings, both cars were traveling north on the expressway leading up to Benton Street when the driver of the Honda made a turn that was judged unsafe, which caused the Honda to lose control and crash into the pole.
Initial observations suggested the Honda might have been moving at a high rate of speed, though an official determination is still pending. The officer in charge of the Santa Clara Unified School District mentioned that support services, including counseling, would be made available to students following this tragic event. The district spokesperson expressed deep sorrow and pledged to provide necessary resources for those affected.
Anyone who witnessed the accident is being urged to contact the traffic investigator, Scott Wilson, via phone at 408-615-4764 or through the Santa Clara Police Department’s confidential reporting line at (408) 615-4TIP (4847).
