Fatal Oconee County car crash death of Rafael B. Veloz

A serious multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 85 near the Georgia-South Carolina state line this morning resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. The South Carolina Department of Transportation reported the incident occurred approximately at 6 a.m. close to exit 2.

Highway Patrol officials confirmed the crash involved four regular cars and one large truck. According to troopers, a Freightliner truck collided with a Honda sedan, which in turn crashed into a Chevrolet pickup. This pickup then fronted into another Chevy pickup. Both the initial Honda and the truck subsequently crossed the barrier and collided with another 2015 Chevy truck.

Oconee County Coroner’s Office officials confirmed the 34-year-old Buford, Georgia resident, Rafael B. Veloz, was driving the Honda at the time of the accident. He was found trapped inside his car and rescued, though EMS provided emergency care. Veloz later passed away around 7 a.m.

The occupants of the three Chevrolet pickups received injuries and were transported to local medical facilities. The truck driver suffered no injuries.

Investigators reported the involved automobiles were decelerating due to ongoing construction work when the crash happened.

The incident is currently being examined by the Highway Patrol.
