Fatal Wheaton hit-and-run death of Ganga Prajapati
Montgomery County law enforcement officials announced on Thursday that the individual struck and killed as a pedestrian during a hit-and-run incident on Tuesday evening in Wheaton was Ganga Prajapati, identified as being 52 years old and residing in New Carrollton.
Law enforcement is actively pursuing leads to identify the driver responsible for fleeing the scene. According to police reports, the collision transpired shortly before 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of eastbound Veirs Mill Road and Ennalls Avenue. This occurrence marks the second fatality involving a pedestrian within Montgomery County over a two-day period.
Further emphasizing the recent trend, authorities noted that on Sunday, a teenager from Kensington was killed after being struck by a motor vehicle on University Boulevard West. Tragically, the location of this previous incident was less than one mile removed from the scene where Prajapati lost her life.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Fire Department, arrived at the scene on Tuesday night to find Prajapati suffering from critical injuries located on the roadway. Medical personnel attempted to provide treatment, but she was subsequently transported to a nearby medical facility where her condition proved fatal.
This incident contributes to a concerning statistic. Police indicated that the two pedestrian fatalities occurring within county roads during this time period bring the total number of such deaths on Montgomery County streets this year to eleven. To provide context, they also mentioned that there were sixteen pedestrian fatalities recorded on county roads during the entire year of 2024.
On Wednesday, investigators issued a public appeal for information regarding the Wheaton hit-and-run. They described the suspected vehicle as a silver sedan, specifically a model year 2009 through 2012 Audi A4 or S4. Police expressed the likelihood that this vehicle sustained significant damage, including harm to its windshield, left front headlight, and fog lights.
