Fatal Dunkirk car crash death of Joseph Damico, 44
A man identified as Joseph Damico, aged 44, lost his life in a tragic vehicle collision on Wednesday. The incident took place on Route 5 within the town of Portland, New York. According to reports from the New York State Police at their Fredonia Post, authorities initiated a pursuit after observing Damico driving a motor vehicle westbound on State Route 5 in Dunkirk.
The high-speed chase, which authorities stated was ongoing because Damico was driving without probable cause, continued for roughly six minutes. The pursuit ultimately concluded when Damico’s 2010 Jeep Liberty collided with the rear of a 2013 Toyota Rav 4. Both vehicles subsequently departed the roadway and landed in a sharply sloped drainage ditch alongside the road.
Joseph Damico was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of the other vehicle involved in the crash was not injured. In the immediate aftermath, a section of Route 5 remained closed to traffic for approximately six hours.
Multiple state police units responded to the scene, including the Collision Reconstruction Unit, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Forensic Identification Unit, and the Professional Standards Bureau. Additionally, the Attorney General’s Office became involved. These agencies are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
