According to reports from ABC 7, WGN-TV and Lake & McHenry County Scanner, referencing local law enforcement, a 49-year-old woman identified as Rosalinda Vaca has been taken into custody following a deadly hit-and-run incident in Waukegan, Illinois. Vaca, who has not yet been arrested, surrendered to authorities on Tuesday evening, the news outlets reported.
The victim of the fatal accident was a pregnant woman named Michelle Heidbrick, who was pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility after sustaining severe injuries, her sister Nicole Heidbrick and fiancé Charlie Walkanoff confirmed to the media outlets. Heidbrick, who was 36 years old and five months pregnant, was walking with her fiancé when the car struck her and fled the scene, witnesses informed the police, as per the reports.
As reported by the outlets, Walkanoff described the moment the incident occurred, stating he heard a loud noise and then saw Heidbrick being thrown down the street. He later recounted his desperate plea for someone to alert the authorities, but a passerby stepped forward and called emergency services.
Heidbrick was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Additionally, the outlets noted that her unborn child also did not survive the tragic incident.
According to the sources, Vaca reportedly turned herself in after learning from television news that a pregnant woman had been killed in a collision on Sunday. She allegedly informed police that she had struck an object while driving that day but only became aware of the fatal outcome upon seeing the news coverage.
