Fairfax County authorities report that a woman was killed in Hybla Valley late Tuesday after being involved in a hit-and-run incident and subsequently struck by a responding police officer.
Trina Jones, who was 62 and lived in Alexandria, was crossing Richmond Highway near Belford Drive, just outside the Mount Vernon Crossroads shopping center, when a southbound sedan driver hit her, police indicate.
One officer arrived at the scene around 8:39 p.m. and then collided with Jones while operating their marked patrol vehicle, according to the FCPD.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel provided emergency medical treatment, but Jones was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Following a witness statement, detectives from the FCPD believe the initial driver was operating a 2016 black Mercedes C300 and departed the area by continuing southbound on Richmond Highway. Authorities have secured an image of the vehicle.
In addition to searching for the initial driver, police have launched both criminal and administrative probes into the officer who caused the secondary collision.
“The officer involved in the second crash has been confirmed as a 2-year veteran assigned to the Mount Vernon Patrol District,” the FCPD indicated in a press release Wednesday. “Consistent with department procedures, the officer is currently on restricted duty pending the findings of the ongoing examination.”
The criminal inquiry is being carried out by the FCPD’s Major Crimes Bureau, which will subsequently provide its conclusions to Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano’s office. The administrative assessment is being addressed by internal affairs.
