Fatal Phoenix shooting death of Efrin Victor Evangelista

New details have emerged in the investigation of a fatal shooting in Phoenix. According to court documents, the suspect, Bryan Barrientos, allegedly admitted to shooting a man eight times without provocation. The incident occurred near a canal located at the intersection of 36th Street and McDowell Road.

Phoenix police responded to the scene on September 22nd at approximately 11:45 a.m. The victim, identified as 48-year-old Efrin Victor Evangelista, was discovered deceased with early signs of decomposition. Police observed clear signs of trauma on the body.

A witness contacted law enforcement on September 19th around 5:45 p.m. to report hearing gunfire. This individual stated they observed five to six shots fired shortly before their call. The witness later described seeing a man jump a fence from the canal area and behaving erratically while holding a black firearm. This man allegedly told the witness, “I just killed a Black guy.”

The witness expressed concern for nearby children and followed the suspect’s movements until the man entered a Liquor Wheel store. After purchasing items from the store, the suspect approached a city bus stop before disappearing from view. Surveillance footage and facial recognition led police to identify Bryan Barrientos, a 23-year-old man matching the witness’s description.

Investigators discovered a connection between Barrientos and a domestic violence incident on the same day. During a recorded interview, Barrientos admitted to shooting practice while intoxicated and stated he fired eight shots at a sleeping man. He claimed no robbery followed the shooting. Barrientos faces charges including second-degree murder.
