The local coroner identified the deceased diver after receiving a distress alert on Saturday.

Deputy Coroner Darnell Hartwell officially confirmed that the individual, identified as Mark Beckler, a 55-year-old resident of Arlington, Virginia, was the one who had been underwater and later discovered deceased.

Officials from the county sheriff’s office reported that law enforcement responded to the Bushy Park Boat Landing at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

The initial reports indicated that someone who was diving was in serious trouble.

Sheriff Duane Lewis of the county provided an update on Monday, stating that the body was located around 11:30 a.m.

A comprehensive effort was mounted by various agencies, including the Berkeley County Fire and EMS, Central Berkeley Fire and EMS, Pimlico Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Summerville Fire-Rescue, Berkeley County 911 dispatch, Charleston County Rescue services, Joint Base Charleston Police, the county’s coroner’s office, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The U.S. Coast Guard is spearheading the ongoing investigation into this unfortunate occurrence.

Further details regarding the death, including the exact cause, will be ascertained through a scheduled autopsy.
