A Marinette County man was found not guilty on all criminal charges related to a collision that resulted in the deaths of two individuals back in 2024.

According to local court records, Scott Mathis, who was 47 years old and lived in Pembine, was cleared of two counts involving negligent vehicle operation by a jury.

The incident occurred on June 2, 2024, when Mathis was accused of using his cell phone prior to the crash. The accident led to the deaths of Mary Kust, aged 73, and her daughter Elysia Kust, who was 44.

Investigators stated that the crash happened when Mathis was driving along County Highway W. He was alleged to have failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with County Highway B, causing a collision with the Kusts’ vehicle.

Following the jury’s decision, the criminal case against Scott Mathis has been formally closed.
