Fatal New York City beating death of Nicola Tanzi
The identity of the individual killed inside the New York City subway station was confirmed as a security guard known for his church attendance, a loss mourned just a year before he was set to retire. Tanzi, a 64-year-old man, is now identified as the person subjected to a brutal attack.
David Mazariegos, a suspect in his mid-20s, is being held responsible for the alleged assault. Reports indicate he kicked the victim repeatedly, more than fifteen times, near the Jay Street–MetroTech station in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon. Initial statements from law enforcement suggest the suspect claimed he took the victim’s spirit.
The violent incident left the victim with a fractured skull and severe facial injuries, resulting in his death within a short period following the attack, according to The New York Post.
The man identified as Tanzi was recognized Thursday night as the victim of the savage assault. He was well-known in the Brooklyn area and had previously been identified as a dedicated church volunteer.
John Heyer, who holds the position of deacon at the Roman Catholic church Tanzi attended, described the victim as a person with a compassionate nature. Heyer, speaking to The New York Post, noted, ‘Nicky always viewed life positively and showed deep concern for others.’
He continued, ‘I am certain he would offer assistance and extend forgiveness to the person responsible. His approach would likely involve guiding that individual towards necessary support.’
David Mazariegos, the accused, is reported to be a resident of the Bronx with a significant criminal history, including over twenty-four prior arrests. On the day following the incident, he appeared in court in Brooklyn Criminal Court charged with first-degree murder. During his initial court proceedings, he was denied release on bail and was observed with a seemingly mocking expression.
The disturbing attack took place around 3 p.m. at the security entrance of the Jay Street–MetroTech train station. This location was close to where Tanzi worked. Police discovered an adult male in a state of unresponsiveness at this site.
