FORT WORTH, Texas — Authorities confirmed that 52-year-old Opale Marie Whitney died in a New Year’s Eve fire at her home on the 4600 block of Shackleford Street in east Fort Worth.

Whitney’s daughter identified her mother as the victim in a Facebook post on Wednesday night. The Fort Worth Fire Department reported that crews were dispatched to the single-story residence at 11:50 a.m. on December 31 and arrived within minutes to find the home engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, but Whitney tragically lost her life in the incident. The circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation.
