Richard Bills, 72, of Gillespie County, died when the single-engine Lancair Legacy aircraft he was piloting crashed in a rural area along Keese Sagebiel Road in Fredericksburg on December 30. Bills was the sole occupant of the plane, which became fully engulfed in flames upon impact in heavy brush.

According to flight tracking records, Bills departed from Gillespie County Airport at 3:47 p.m. and flew approximately 102 miles before the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Emergency crews responded to the scene after the aircraft went down, confirming that there were no survivors.
