Fatal Florida City home invasion death of Carl Melvin – Obituary
Two men, Roderick Everett and Christopher Hankerson, are facing first-degree murder charges in connection with a deadly home invasion in Florida City on January 12, 2026. The suspects, armed and masked, entered an apartment, demanding money from the victims. Parts of the violent encounter were captured on Facebook Live, including audio of the suspects asking for money before gunshots rang out.
Carl Melvin, also known as “Baldy,” was killed in the attack, while another victim, Quantavious Smith, was shot and airlifted to a hospital. Investigators have confirmed both Everett and Hankerson fired weapons during the incident. Surveillance footage and witness statements helped link the men to the crime.
Both suspects are facing two counts of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. They are being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Everett and Hankerson are fugitives from other counties, and a judge has ordered them to stay away from Smith.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting.
