Fatal Rich Square car crash death of Dexter Jermaine Jenkins – Obituary
Dexter Jermaine Jenkins, 42, of Ahoskie, lost his life early Monday morning after a single-vehicle wreck along Highway 305 near Rich Square, close to the Northampton and Hertford county line.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol officials said the collision happened at approximately 2 a.m. on January 19. Jenkins was riding as a passenger and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified the driver as 31-year-old Jalissa Latifah Eley of Gaston. She was charged with multiple offenses, including driving left of center, driving with a revoked license, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, and an open container violation.
According to investigators, Eley did not show signs of alcohol impairment during testing at the crash site. However, troopers issued the open container charge because the container was located in a vehicle registered to her.
Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane after the driver attempted to avoid an animal in the roadway. The car then ran off the road into a ditch and collided with a Department of Transportation road sign, resulting in the fatal outcome.
